The Feminist History Society is a project of the Women’s Education and Research Foundation of Ontario Incorporated (“WERF”), a registered charitable organization in Canada.* The members of the volunteer steering committee for the project are: Beth Atcheson, Constance Backhouse, Lorraine Greaves, Diana Majury and Beth Symes. In February 2008, a group of feminist activists from across Canada met in the Senate Room of the University of Ottawa to discuss how we could describe, document, preserve and celebrate the work and character of our times, of the women’s movement in Canada over the last 50 years, since the founding of the Voice of Women (now the Voice of Women for Peace). We took as one of our inspirations for this journey the six-volume history of the American suffrage movement, written by the women who participated in it, and published in a beautiful hardcover edition.

The Sharing Place has serviced the Bloor West and Junction communities for over twenty years and provides a safe place for anyone that needs a hot meal or a bag of groceries each Thursday. Community groups regardless of creed have served meals in the morning and evening all year round. Groups that support the services of the Sharing Place include the students of Humberside Collegiate and various neighborhood churches. The Sharing Place is supported and affiliated with the Nazarene Church of Canada. Nazarene congregations meet at the Sharing Place including Grace at the Sharing Place and a Spanish congregations which provide a spiritual outlet for many of those that call the Sharing Place home on Thursdays. Those that serve the Sharing Place community do so out of a spirit of brotherly and sisterly love as commanded by Jesus and the early churcb. Acts chapter 2 states: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Acts 2:42-45 TNIV It is out of this spirit that we ask anyone regardless of denomination or creed to support the Sharing Place with either a donation of time, food, clothing or money.
