The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) is a not-for-profit coalition of individuals and organizations which provides leadership, support and advocacy for Aboriginal people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS, regardless of where they reside. The philosophy of this agency is that all Aboriginal people deserve the right to protect ourselves against infectious disease. Education and prevention is focused on empowerment as Aboriginal people are encouraged to learn about the risks of HIV and AIDS and protect ourselves accordingly. To provide Aboriginal people with accurate and up-to-date information about the nature of the disease, the risks of contracting it, and the issues of care/treatment and support for those infected is the challenge that CAAN employees and directors face each day of their involvement with the agency. We all appreciate the value of Bike Safety Skills - teaching our kids about, and personally adhering to the rules of the road, and making sure they wear a helmet. We all appreciate the value of Road Safety Skills - not stepping out from between parked cars, using the crosswalk, and looking both ways before crossing the street. This does not mean that we need to fear, or teach our children to fear the water, bike paths, or the road, but it does mean we recognize the need to provide some essential instruction to keep them safe.

The City & County of Grande Prai-rie has offered homeless shelter services since 1970. The need, however, since the 70’s has grown exponentially throughout Canada. In response to both in-creased need and the will of the community, Wapiti Community Dorm Society incorporated (1996) to provide temporary housing to the homeless and hard-to-house in Grande Prairie. By 2005, the existing facility had decrepitated to the point where the price to upgrade the building and replace failing major mechanical systems out-weighed the cost of a new build. The planning for a new homeless shelter facility began.
