Research in Action Poster sessions during CAEP 2014 in Ottawa The CAEP Research Committee supports the development of emergency-medicine-related research skills across Canada by administering two programs: an annual CAEP Grant Competition and the CAEP Abstract Competition . The CAEP Grant Competition identifies promising research grant proposals from medical students, residents, and junior faculty and awards five grants annually of up to $5000 each. Many of the previous CAEP Grant Winners continue with successful research careers. Research poster and plenary sessions during CAEP 2014 in Ottawa The CAEP Abstract Competition evaluates hundreds of abstracts submitted from across Canada and internationally to be considered for presentation in the CAEP Conference held annually in early June. Submissions to both competitions are carefully evaluated and scored by at least three highly-qualified reviewers. The Research Committee is reliant on these volunteers and appreciates their substantial contribution to support Canadian emergency medicine research. A poster session during CAEP 2013 in Vancouver Research Support Support of the Research Committee efforts requires funding. Generous membership contributions help to support both CAEP Grant Awards and the CAEP Research Awards (for the best abstracts submitted to the abstract competition). Past competitions have been partially supported by corporate funds and administered by the Research Committee. Special Interests The Research Committee also works with and supports special interest research sub-committees and interest group. These groups report annually. Rob Green CAEP Research Committee Chair Questions about the Research Committee can be directed to the Research Manager, Jennifer Artz at jartz@caep.ca (613-523-3343x18).

In response to a community-based proposal from parents and educators of preschoolers in the Ottawa-Carleton region, the Parent Resource Centre (formerly known as the Parent Preschool Resource Centre) opened in 1975 as a demonstration project of the Ministry of National Health and Welfare (now Health Canada). The original aim was to provide a centralized location to store, share and distribute information about the needs of preschool children, aged birth to five. The Centre evolved as a community-wide resource for caregivers, parents and professionals involved with early childhood issues. It soon became apparent that one of the most important aspects of the Centre's service was to provide a place for parents and caregivers to meet, to access resources and to connect with other adults while their preschoolers played. "Drop-In" hours were extended and the number of daytime workshops and opportunities for volunteering were increased to meet the needs of the community. Outreach to caregivers and other community groups followed, and the past two decades have seen tremendous achievements throughout the wider community, particularly in supporting parents who, because of their social and economic circumstances, might not have access to the resources they need as they take on the challenging job of raising young children.
The Parent Resource Centre is highly regarded by its customers for its EarlyOn programs, which offer unique and educational activities, a huge toy library, inclusive atmosphere, amazing staff, flexible scheduling, and a beautiful space. Customers are grateful for the diverse toys and the opportunity to socialize their children without overcrowding. The centre provides essential resources for parents, including household items and online courses.

The OK clean Water Project began in 2003 as a partnership between two groups of people - one in Ottawa, Canada, and one in Kumbo, Cameroon, Africa. Sister Cathy Molloy, living in the Kumbo area, invited the Ottawa group to respond to the needs of the people in her tiny village of Tobin. Of the 21 families living there, 11 had no access to potable water and had to rely on a polluted stream or walk long distances for water. The Ottawa group responded by raising $3, 000 to help these 11 families. And thus the Ottawa-Kumbo partnership was born and was named "OK Clean Water Project".
