As an advocate for Canadian Expats, the association plays a key role representing Canadians that until now have had no collective voice.

Each year, 1700 young people have the life changing experience of learning to sail a tall ship with SALTS. Voyages take them to the Gulf Islands of BC each spring and fall, and in the summer the ships circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Periodically, SALTS conducts an offshore voyage to ports around the world. Young people from all socio-economic backgrounds participate, and a bursary program helps cover costs for those who cannot afford to pay. SALTS partners with numerous other youth organizations to provide bursaries to youth who are at-risk, from low income households, or from challenging life situations. Young “trainees” learn all aspects of sailing the ship. They are split into three “watches” (groups) and given responsibilities as training crew. At least one watch is always on duty, working in shifts both day and night. Duties include taking the wheel of the ship, bow watch, sail handling, anchor watch, navigation, radio monitoring, small boat handling, galley chores, etc. Formal instruction is given regarding sailing theory, rules of the road, sailing terminology, knots, etc. Trainees work their way through the SALTS sail training curriculum. Shore trips to beautiful coastal islands and rousing evening mug-ups with games, stories, and singing make for an exciting and diverse experience.
Customers frequently describe S.A.L.T.S. Sail & Life Training Society as providing incredible, wonderful, andamazing experiences. The crew is commended for their excellent training and skills. Food is also a highlight for many.

GVHA is a society registered with the Province of British Columbia and the Constitution and Bylaws of the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority are governed under the Society Act of British Columbia. GVHA's Board is comprised of Directors representing the its member agencies and organizations (Esquimalt Nation, Songhees Nation, Provincial Capital Commission, City of Victoria, Township of Esquimalt, the Victoria/Esquimalt Harbour Society, Tourism Victoria, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, and the Capital Regional district) and four community directors. The Victoria Harbour, gateway to British Columbia and Canada, is one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. The harbour has had a long history, starting with its use by First Nations. Recreational vessels and small cruise ships can moor in the centre of this famous heritage city, just steps from its historic streets and distinctive architecture. During the summer months, the harbour is the focus of festivals, shows and music. The Port of Victoria, although a major tourist attraction, remains a working harbour with a rich mixture of activities. The harbour serves the cruise ship industry, whale watching and ecotourism, ship repairing facilities, a float plane aerodrome, marine industrial uses, an International Ferry terminal with connections to Port Angeles, Bellingham and Seattle, and a water taxi service.
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority's marinas, specifically Causeway Marina, are praised for their excellent locations, large docks, helpful and friendly staff, and knowledgeable dockhands. Several visitors mention the wonderful and welcoming atmosphere, with some highlighting the reasonable moorage rates and convenient amenities.
