The Art work, or canvas in the Sanctuary. Is it really about Advent? This painting represents a sunset or sunrise which are liminal times in day /night experience. The Christian calendar offers us Advent, four weeks to engage in the spiritual practice of how to live with ambiguity, how to entrust and wait. The word “liminal” comes from the Latin word limens, meaning literally, “threshold.” A liminal space is the place of transition, waiting, and not knowing. This is the Advent experience. Richard Rohr shares that liminal time is a unique spiritual practice where human beings hate to be but where the biblical God is always leading them. It is when you have left the tried and true, but have not yet been able to replace it with anything else, it is when you are finally out of the way, it is when you are between your old comfort zone and any possible new answer. Our artist-Lynn Kingham & Marilyn Poutanen.
