About Edmonton Meals on Wheels The first hot meals were delivered April 21, 1969. We have a long and experienced history in Edmonton and are continually expanding and evolving to better meet the changing needs and demographics of the city. Since 1988 we have had our own food production and distribution centre, hired Red Seal cooks and by continually monitoring our client’s preferences and needs we respond with changes to our menus and programs to better serve our community. Feeding Body and Soul... The service that Edmonton Meals on Wheels provides is farther reaching than just food. We’ve been told that the volunteers’ daily visits are equally as important as the food. In fact, food is our means of breaking social isolation, nourishing our community and building trusting relationships. Building friendships, sharing a story and doing the “little extras” when asked are considered by many to be just as important as the delivery of great food. We are the amalgamation of two internationally recognized child serving organizations; Boys & Girls Clubs and Big Brothers Big Sisters. By combining the concepts of both, BGCBigs delivers programs that address the physical, emotional, academic and overall wellness of children and youth. In 2012/13, nearly 5, 000 kids and their families participated in our programs, with the support of over 3, 200 volunteers. BGCBigs provides safe places for kids to be after school and during school holidays through our 9 neighbourhood clubs and more than 20 additional group programs. With school and community partnerships, our goals is to ensure kids have access to supportive programming, meal provision and adult mentoring where they live and learn. We also offer volunteer driven mentoring programs in a variety of ways. Caring adults share their time with a child or group of children in more than 60 Edmonton and area schools and in the community. BGCBigs is a member of two longstanding and well-known National organizations. Big Sisters & Big Brothers receives praise for its volunteers' kindness and compassion towards children. One customer expresses appreciation for the used clothing donation box. Some clients have positive experiences with the program's support during crises. One former employee voices their support.

Multicultural Health Brokers Co-op (MCHB) began 24 years ago to support Edmonton’s newcomers. The goal was to enhance the health and well-being of families, and foster their efforts at building community so they could thrive, and actively contribute to society. Our cultural brokers are from immigrant communities, and know first hand the social, economic, and language difficulties that immigrants and refugees face. This places us in a unique position to bridge the gap between newcomer families and Canadian society. The Multicultural Health Brokers Co-op and its employee Daljit are commended for their kindness, helpfulness, and support during challenging times, specifically in helping customers find furniture and adjust to new living situations. Urban Manor was originally named “Urban House” and opened on March 1, 1982. Social Services and Community Health, inner city agencies, and residents worked very hard to create this temporary space in order to provide a home for hard to house men in the inner city. Urban Manor’s current building opened on July 9, 2002. It is the first of its kind aiming to tend to the unique needs of their clients. It is also the first building to be owned by the Urban Manor Housing Society.
