Teen Challenge of Central Canada is a 12-month Christian discipleship program for men & woman struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction. The first Teen Challenge centre was founded by the late David Wilkerson, author of The Cross and the Switchblade, more than 50 years ago in Brooklyn NY. Today Teen Challenge operates more than 1000 programs in 80 countries around the globe, making it the largest and most successful faith-based drug treatment program in the world. Teen Challenge of Central Canada began in 1995 with a small 10-bed trailer in Hadashville, Manitoba. Today we run men's homes in Winnipeg, Denare Beach and Thunder Bay as well as our woman's home in Brandon. Our administration office/vehicle donation shop building is located on the outskirts of Winnipeg. Teen Challenge is a well-organized business in the scrap metals and materials merchants industry. Since Dollie McGuire started programs for children and adults when she founded the “House of Prayer for All People” in 1887, the United Church has been present to the people in Winnipeg’s north end. Today, the north end is home to a large Aboriginal population, giving the neighbourhood vibrancy and character. The commitment of Northend Stella Community Ministry is to actively work in partnership with this dynamic group of people who make this community their home. The United Church’s network of community ministries is diverse. They share some characteristics in common though. These ministries serve an economically and socially stressed neighbourhood with a primary focus on assisting people to have their physical needs (like food and housing) met in addition to providing for their spiritual needs. Historically the word “mission” was used to describe this work.
