Throughout the 1980s the Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board) considered establishing a school for the Performing Arts. It was felt that all students with clearly identified talents in the arts regardless of their socio-economic status, race or cultural background, should have the opportunity to develop those talents within the TCDSB system. Therefore with the commitment and interest of parents and students, the first set of auditions were held in January 1990. Five hundred applications were processed for 250 positions and Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts opened its doors to grade 7, 8 and 9 students in September 1990. The school was named after Gerald Emmett Cardinal Carter, Ordinary of the Archdiocese of Toronto from 1978 to 1990, a strong supporter of education and a distinguished patron of the arts. CCAA is a Catholic school community built upon Gospel values and the love of learning.

Every woman has a leading role in her own unfolding life story. Through many years spent in fitness & dance facilities, I have heard hundreds of personal stories and realize that there are a multitude of reasons “why” women attend “class”. Some women attend when they are inspired to express inner joy and their love of dance; others when they find themselves to be in a situation which they need to understand or change. Whatever the case, it seems to me that women attend “class” in order to see themselves reflected in one another’s experience. Belly dance is a way for women to better understand themselves as it is both physically and emotionally moving. This is my personal experience of this magical, mythical, middle-eastern dance and the primary motivator for the creation of the HiP KiK Belly Dance and Fitness Studio. When a woman senses that there is a mythical dimension to something she is undertaking, that knowledge touches and inspires deep creative centres within her. I invite you to accompany us as we discover ourselves and one another through this ancient feminine art form. My name is Souhaer Zarik and I invite you to join us in the dance of self discovery.
