Pi Beta Phi was founded on August 28, 1867 at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. Our 12 founders had a vision to form the first national secret society for women at a time when only five state universities admitted women. We pride ourselves in being the first national secret college society of women to be modelled after the Greek-letter fraternities. There are currently 135 Pi Beta Phi chapters across the United States and Canada with over 241, 000 members. Pi Beta Phi is dedicated to philanthropic and community service efforts that will remove the barrier of illiteracy. As a Chapter we hold multiple fundraisers to raise money to provide books for underprivileged children. We accomplish our goal through First Book and Pi Beta Phi Foundation. All our members volunteer regularly, working with Frontier College or the Volunteer Readers Programme.

Integrated medical education (IME) represents a project of transformational change. Our project is to change the way that our learners, full and community-affiliated hospitals, faculty members and staff think about – and engage with – the delivery of medical education at the University of Toronto. Indeed, successful outcomes of integrated education shall be defined by excellent performance of learners and the teachers in the short term, and improved quality of care in community sites in the longer term. Another important outcome will be the advancement of academic leadership in the community sites recognized by the Clinical Departments as integral to their University missions and visions.

Quinn M. Konopacky is a postdoctoral researcher at the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics. My main research interests include star and planet formation and evolution as probed through ground based high angular resolution techniques. I am a member of the commissioning and science team for the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI, PI Dr. Bruce Macintosh (LLNL); PS Prof. James Graham (DI, UC Berkeley)). GPI, scheduled for first light on Gemini South in Chile in early 2013, is designed specifically for the purpose of directly detecting young gas giant planets orbiting nearby stars. Our science campaign team has been awarded almost 900 hours of observing to survey 600 nearby young stars over the course of 3 years (GPIES).
