With around 600 000 members across Canada, CUPE represents workers in health care, education, municipalities, libraries, universities, social services, public utilities, transportation, emergency services and airlines. CUPE members are service-providers, white-collar workers, technicians, labourers, skilled trades people and professionals. More than half of CUPE members are women. About one-third are part-time workers. CUPE is a modern, dynamic and sophisticated union with more than 70 offices across the country. Workers, united through CUPE, have the clout and expertise to deal with the growing complexities of our global economy. The CUPE voter's guide is a useful tool to compare the platforms of the four major parties. It covers issues like health care, cities, child care, women and a whole lot more. Compare the platforms and remember to vote positive, vote public. Trustees act as internal auditors. The primary duty of Trustees is to uncover any fraud or misuse of union funds. The secondary function of Trustees is to review the way that the Secretary-Treasurer is doing his or her job and to suggest ways that the financial affairs of the local could be improved. CUPE is opposed to services being delivered by the lowest bidder. The drive towards the lowest bid is a “race to the bottom” for public sector workers and the services they provide. This document is designed to help CUPE members fight against competitive bidding and resist this renewed attempt by employers to wring concessions from them.

Members at GSU's 2009 annual general meetings voted on important constitutional and bylaw changes which resulted in reorganizing GSU into Locals based on member bargaining units (i.e. Viterra, Heartland, Finora, PrintWest, etc.) rather than geographic locations. Other proposed constitutional amendments included changing the name of the union to Grain and General Services Union (ILWU•Canada) effective January 1, 2010. “GSU’s Joint Executive Council members felt the proposed change in name better reflects our diverse membership,” GSU general secretary Hugh Wagner explained. “Adding the word ‘General’ acknowledges our members who do not work in the agricultural industry and the potential for growth outside our traditional areas.” “At the same time, Council members felt it was important to keep the word ‘Grain’ to reflect the contribution and history as an organization founded by employees working for grain companies,“ Wagner added.
