A new service for children struggling with Dyslexia and other learning difficulties has been launched in SARNIA, Ontario. The computer-based course is called Touch-Type, Read and Spell (TTRS) and is being run by Keys to Reading (Canada) ® explains Joanne Webb, the company’s president and course facilitator. “This course is specifically designed to develop the literacy as well as the confidence and self-esteem of children with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. It can improve the students’ reading, spelling and touch-typing skills. During the course the student will learn a vocabulary of 4, 000 words through typing, seeing the words and sentences on screen and hearing them on headphones. This is a unique three-pronged approach designed to teach familiarity and confidence with the vocabulary and its uses”. “We have been running this course since the summer of 2009 and already have many children attending. We have received very good reports from parents as to how this course is helping these children in school. Word of mouth has been our best advertising to date in raising awareness and demand for more class space.” “Developed in England, the course has been running in the UK for over 16 years and in many countries throughout the world. Along with developing literacy, TTRS also teaches typing skills. Children who struggle with Dyslexia or with learning difficulties are always advised and encouraged by resource teachers, and indeed by educational psychologists, to develop their typing skills. It makes it easier to produce a volume of work when a child is able to type at a brisk speed”. “Keys to Reading is the regional license holder for all of Ontario explains Adrian Webb the company’s marketing director.” Over the coming months we hope to launch the program throughout Ontario. The company is also looking for dedicated, professional individuals or companies to help bring TTRS to as wide an audience as possible”.
