For the past 39 years, the Peterborough Social Planning Council has been working to improve the quality of life for all community members in Peterborough City and County. It is our belief that to have a truly healthy community we must remove the barriers to full inclusion and involvement in our society. The Peterborough Social Planning Council began as the Social Planning Committee of the United Way Community Services Organization, the predecessor to the United Way of Peterborough in the late 1960’s.

The Peterborough Family Health Team was created by the physicians of Peterborough to address systemic crises in local health care: too many unattached patients, growing strain on outpatient and Emergency Department (ED) services, and a rising incidence of chronic disease. These crises arose from a failing primary care system, as new physicians chose other forms of practice while those who remained lacked the resources to provide the care their patients and our community required. As a provincial health care leader and community partner, the Peterborough Family Health Team coordinates and empowers family practice-centred multidisciplinary teams to provide high quality, evidence-based, primary care to meet the needs of all residents of Peterborough County.
