Taj Indian Cuisine is a family business that opened in 1987 and has remained a fixture in Ottawa for nearly 25 years. At Taj Indian Cuisine, our customers are treated to North Indian style cooking, prepared from a selection of Mughlai recipes. Mughlai dishes originated in the 16th Century and were specifically prepared for the Moghul Emperors with the influence of Muslim cooking. The history quality and rich tastes earned it the name ‘Mughlai’ which translates to ‘Royal’ in Hindi. Mughlai cuisinary includes the spicy Muslim influenced Korma dishes, the savoury Tandoori’s and the popular Bhuna dishes that are served piping hot. At Taj Indian Cuisine, our style of cooking is based on authentic recipes that were handed down from generation to generation. What makes our food special is the pride we take in our preparation by freshly grinding our spices and using a well measurement for each dish. As well as, we do not rely on using any preservatives. We stand apart from our competitors by eschewing the use of preservatives, preparing each dish afresh. Our goal is to provide more variety and introduce new designer recipes for customers to sample. Mugena Enterprises was formed in 1995 as an integrated African-Caribbean and South American ethnic operation serving primarily groceries, beauty products, tropical ice creams and Caribbean cuisine of the finest kind. Owned and operated by Iddi and Myrle Alhassan, Mugena, has over the years, grown into a community gathering hole where most of these ethnic products can be found. The name Mugena is derived from the Hausa language which is spoken in the northern part of Ghana, Nigeria and many other parts of West Africa. It simply means, “let us build”. Suffice to say the Ottawa community has been quite supportive and today we can boast a customer base that covers all persons who are interested in Caribbean cuisine or products from Africa, the Caribbean, South and Latin America. Mugena participates in most of the summer festivals in Ottawa, including the Dragon Boat Festival, the Jazz Festival, the Canada Day (July 1st) Festival, the Blues Festival, the Jamaica Day festival, Carivibe, the Jamaica Day jump-up in Merrickville and the Folk Festival at Britannia Park. Our efforts have, in small way, contributed to popularizing Caribbean cuisine in the Ottawa-Gatineau Region. And the building process continues. We have now expanded our activities to include catering services rivaled by none in the community for its quality, price and consistency of service. All these efforts contribute to creating employment opportunities and training for youth in the community.
