The Outaouais S.P.C.A. was founded in Gatineau in 1982. It was formed by a group of concerned citizens worried about the fate of animals in their municipality. At the time there were no animal shelters, which meant that all abandoned or unwanted animals were condemned to a certain death. On May 5, 1984 the Outaouais S.P.C.A. received the status of non-profit-group and was registered as such with the Canada Revenue Agency. The Outaouais S.P.C.A.’s first shelter opened its doors on March 12, 1986. In the beginning, it housed 1, 800 animals annually. By 2011, the number of animals accommodated had risen to 9, 235, not including the many animals rescued from distressing situations. Since the founding of the organization, nearly 125, 000 animals have been housed at the shelter. Close to 16, 000 complaints of poor treatment have been dealt with and our emergency services have rescued more than 32, 500 stray animals in need of help. The Outaouais Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a non-profit organization whose main goal is to ensure the protection of all animals in the region.
The SPCA de l'Outaouais is praised for its dedicated staff, kind and attentive service, and commitment to animal welfare. Several customers have had positive experiences adopting animals and express gratitude for the organization's work. However, some concerns have been raised about communication issues, difficulty reaching reception, and long wait times for appointments.
