The Atlantic Region has seven National Airport System (NAS) airports, including the Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, Charlottetown and St. John's international airports. Together the seven airports serve approximately 90% of all air passenger traffic in Atlantic Canada. In 2007, they collectively served more than 6 million passengers. There are also 26 smaller registered and certified airports and 24 certifies heliports in the Region, many of which serve communities with no access to the highway system and for whom aviation is the only means of year-round transportation. Transport Canada's Atlantic Region oversees the National Airports System operations transferred under the National Airports Policy, while continuing to operate the St. Anthony Airport and the Wabush Airport. It also also manages the Labrador Coast Airstrip Restoration Program and the Airports Capital Assistance Program. The Department is responsible for aviation safety and air security and has an active Regional Aviation Safety Council. The goal of the Council is to create a communication platform between the industry and Transport Canada to identify, discuss and resolve aviation safety-related issues.
