Physical Location and Facilities The Institute, whose beautifully landscaped grounds cover an area of 18 acres, is situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River in Cornwall, Ontario. This Canadian city, located between Montreal and Toronto is 60 miles from Ottawa, the capital of Canada, and approximately 3 miles from the U. A. Purchase of School Building Al-Rashid Islamic Institute began operating in 1980 in Montreal. At the time teaching was conducted at different venues while a search for a permanent location went on in earnest. A suitable place was found in Cornwall, Ontario, in 1985. This property was formerly a hospital, then a nursing home. It also neighbours an elementary public school which has since closed down, and by the Grace of Allah was purchased by the Institute in 2003. All secular classes are now held there and Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha prayers are performed in the Gymnasium every year. Purchase of Land for Cemetery It is a crucial part of an Islamic identity to have a distinct Muslim cemetery. Some effort was being made towards this goal when opportunity arose in 2005, and approximately 500 feet east of the Institute, a 72 acre parcel of land was purchased. It is suitable for any kind of further development, but for the time being, a process is underway to turn a part of the land into a graveyard. There are over a 1000 men, women and children in Cornwall who face hunger every day. Their stories are as diverse as the city and three counties served by the Agapè Centre: working families hit hard by the recession, women and children, seniors trying to make ends meet. The one thing they have in common is being part of a food system that desperately needs additional support. The Agapè Centre was created in 1971 with the simple belief that no man, woman or child should go hungry or without the basic necessities of life. Agapè means love and serves all people without the preference to colour, race or religion. In June 1977, it was operating from a garage. With the help of St. John Bosco Parish, Agapè opened its doors at 818 York St. on October 19, 1977. On November, 1989, the Agapè Centre moved to 301-C McConnell Avenue. The mission at the Agapè Centre is to reduce the impact of poverty within the community and since 2001 the Centre has seen staggering increases in the number of the people assisted. An acute need for additional space was needed. The Agapè Centre undertook a capital campaign and purchased the building, Saint Columban’s Parish Centre December 2006, on 40 Fifth Street West, Cornwall which is where we still are. Agapé Centre Thrift Shops is a community thrift store with low prices and kind staff. Customers appreciate the wide selection of items, friendly service, and the fact that proceeds support community resources and food banks. Some customers have found unique treasures and needed items at the best prices.
