Lara Tomaszewska, PhD, ISA Principal Openwork Art Advisory was founded by Lara Tomaszewska in 2012. Lara holds a PhD in art history from the University of British Columbia (2007). She specializes in 19th and 20th century modernism with a focus on art and cultural practices on the West Coast of North America, including painting, film, photography and First Nations art. Her broad areas of interest include 19th and 20th century European representation, American modern painting, pop art, and contemporary art. At UBC, Lara taught in the departments of Art History and Canadian Studies where she lectured on issues of race, gender, and identity in Canadian art and cultures. She was the founding editor of the graduate art journal and a lead researcher on collaborative projects for the University Archives. Lara has worked in galleries and museums across Canada, including; Guelph Civic Museum, Feheley Fine Arts in Toronto, North Vancouver Museum and Archives, and the Morris & Helen Belkin Gallery in Vancouver. Lara has curated several exhibitions of Canadian and Inuit art in France, the United States and Canada. She has presented her research throughout North America and the UK and has been a guest lecturer at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Lara lectures in the Department of Women’s Studies at the University of Victoria. She is a member of the International Society of Appraisers and an appointed member of the CRD Arts Advisory Council .
