We are proud to carry on the tradition, begun in the 1860's in Victoria of the first dealers in classic and contemporary Northwest coast native art. Including traditional potlatch masks, basketry, shamanic devices, button blankets, totem poles, artefacts, and much more. There is always a selection of plains beadwork and artefacts and other North American, Oceanic, and African tribal art. From a Tokugawa, Shogun's Gift cover to a Stag horn carving of the Virgin Mary and don't forget the odd painting we have had by Copley, Rostraten, and Boudain. We seek the unusual and often find it.

What we do The University of Victoria Art Collections consists of some 27, 000 art objects which support the teaching and research programs of the University. Since the founding of the collection in 1953 a number of named collections have provided the thematic direction of the acquisition program. The two founding collection were the the University of Victoria Collection and the John and Katharine Maltwood Collection. A third collection, the Michael C. Williams Collection, was recently received by way of bequest. It underpins the exhibitions at our downtown Victoria Legacy Gallery. Surroundings was established in 1993 by Kristiane Baskerville. Wanting to make antiques more approachable, she showcased them in a whole new way, combining the best of the old with the new. "I have a passion for all things old. For the store I search high and low for pieces with good bones, style, and function. To me the best antiques transcend time and adapt to the 21st century home with ease. Antiques and vintage finds make a house a home. John Saladino, Michael S. Smith, and Darryl Carter, some of the most influential interior designers in the world, use antiques in their commissions. I don't expect to fill your house with my furniture. My aim is that the furnishings from Surroundings become your favourite pieces in your home." Kristiane is currently creating her own line of furniture. Surroundings, a Victoria antique store, is praised for its unique and beautiful furniture and decor pieces, as well as the friendly and warm owner. The store offers a mix of new and used items, with frequent updates and new deliveries. The window display is often admired. Some have had their first solo exhibition here; others have given classes, been active members, and had studios in one of the 4 locations which we have inhabited over the years. Xchanges is currently home to a gallery exhibition space and studios rented to member artists, including the darkroom of Crossgrain Photographic Society. Life Drawing, Portrait, and Sculpture sessions in the main gallery attract an average of 30 or more outside artists per month. Over the years, Xchanges has hosted events such as poetry readings, concerts, jam sessions, filmmakers’ nights, film festivals, theatre performances, the Mayday Erotica festival, art workshops for both adults and children, and multicultural events such as a monthly Tango Night, exhibitions by the local Native womens’ group, Wild Women, and exchange exhibitions produced by Ground Zero Printmakers exhibiting works from South Africa, New Zealand, and Quebec. Our non-commercial gallery features work by local emerging and established artists. Xchanges' ties to other community arts organizations, through events, membership and the activities of its studio and associate members, continue to make us an integral and vibrant part of the fabric of the Victoria arts community. X Changes Gallery & Studios is a museum and art gallery where customers appreciate the talented models and welcoming atmosphere. Some find the space a bit cramped during life drawing sessions, but enjoy the good lighting and respectful environment. The occasional surprise offering of a free session is a nice touch. The gallery shows and interaction with creative individuals are also highlights.
