This revolutionary method of education is based on the simple and fundamental principle of “following the child”. The Montessori program nurtures the natural development of the child and builds on their innate curiosity to learn. Through peer and teacher interaction and an integrated curriculum that includes activities for self and group learning, children begin a unique experience to self-discovery.The Montessori classroom can be refereed to as a carefully planned environment. By creating a learning space where children feel comfortable to explore, they develop a sense of independence and enhance their cognitive development through ‘learning by doing’. The unique combination of activities coupled with self, peer and teacher learning helps children enhance creativity, build critical thinking and problem solving skills. Our program provides the foundation for life long education, where a deep desire for learning is the result of individual discovery and genuine inquisitiveness.

With lives already overflowing with work and family, many people are turning to knowledgeable alternative medicine practitioners to help them sort through the media-driven health hype and guide them towards a well-researched, nutritionally sound way of living. Graduates of the Institute of Holistic Nutrition (IHN) provide such a role. They are educated partners qualified to devise a personalized and holistic health scheme that integrates and honors the physical, emotional, environmental and spiritual aspects of an individual’s life. IHN is a private college that offers an intensive 1 year full-time or 2 year part-time program based on a university-level curriculum with locations in Ontario and British Columbia. In the GTA, we have campuses in Toronto and Mississauga, and our newest campus in Vancouver will open in October, with classes commencing in January 2011.

Before coming together in 2005, the School of Architecture and School of Landscape Architecture (SALA) operated as two distinct units. The School of Architecture was established in 1946 and shaped by circumstances of geographic isolation and historical immediacy. The School’s early identity was deliberately modernist, largely defined by its first director, Frederic Lasserre, whose vision of the modern project in architecture was set in a program that advocated, in his own words “breaking away from studying the earlier practice of applying old architectural designs to modern needs.”

Both public health and population health value the well being of a community equally. Each examines health trends and causes, and suggests approaches to promoting health. Where they differ is in the way that each addresses and studies the health of a population. Population health focuses on the health outcomes of the entire population, or a sub-population, looking at “societal structures, attitudes and behaviours which influence health”[*], and seeking ways to improve health and reduce health inequities between population groups. Building on traditions of public health and health promotion, the population health approach looks at a broad range of social determinants of health (such as social, economic and physical environments, personal health practices, individual capacity and coping skills, human biology, early childhood development, culture, gender and health services), and addresses those determinants to improve health.
