The mission of Vancouver Native Housing Society is to provide safe, secure, affordable housing for Aboriginal individuals and families living in the urban setting. VNHS was founded in 1984 and manages a portfolio of 17 buildings with a total of 706 units. The Society currently houses approximately 8% of the urban Aboriginal population. We work in partnership with federal and provincial government agencies to achieve affordability for individuals and families with low incomes. In 1984 the primary funding agency was the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), which provided subsidies through the Urban Native Housing Program. In 1997 the responsibility for funding all housing programs was transferred to BC Housing; all developments and acquisitions after 1997 were done in partnership with this provincial housing agency. In 2013, BC Housing transferred responsibility for administration of VNHS housing subsidies to the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA). Although our original and ongoing mandate is to focus on the housing needs of the urban Aboriginal community we have expanded our operations to include housing solutions for seniors, youth, women at risk, persons living with mental illness, as well as those who are homeless or at-risk of becoming homeless. Recognizing that providing housing alone is not enough, some VNHS buildings include on-site support services; in all of our housing developments we strive to help tenants connect to available resources in the community when needed. In recent years the Society has embraced the social enterprise model. In the face of declining government financial support, we work with tenants and the community at large to build economic and individual capacity by adopting an entrepreneurial approach. Two such ventures are the Urban Aboriginal Art Gallery and Skwachays Lodge, both established in 2012.

The Alano Club of Vancouver is a non-profit association intended as a resource for Alcoholics Anonymous members and groups, as well as any individual who has a desire to stop drinking. Alano Club of Vancouver, also known as Edgewood, is a highly regarded social club that specializes in addiction treatment and recovery programs. The supportive counselors, including Patrick and Nelson, have helped numerous customers regain control of their lives. Programs offered include outpatient and aftercare services. The recovery process is not easy, but the tools and guidance provided by Edgewood have led to successful outcomes for many. Individuals have expressed gratitude for the life-saving impact the facility and its staff have had on their journeys of self-discovery and healing.

The Rotary Club of Vancouver is a service club dedicated to improving the lives of others both in our community and around the world. Established in 1913 as the 1st club in British Columbia, and the 2nd in Canada, our Club has a long history of service. Gardening is a practical and economical source of fresh, healthy produce – it’s also a relaxing and social experience which encourages sharing of ideas and experiences. By nurturing and caring for plants and flowers, people feel needed, develop skills, build self-confidence, learn and grow. Unfortunately, people with disabilities face many obstacles to such opportunities. With this in mind, the Disabled Independent Gardeners Association (DIGA) was established in 1987. According to co-founder Barbara Raynor: "Gardening is a focus outside of one's self. The bottom line is, if you are worrying about a plant and what it needs for its well being, you forget your disability. The more you garden, the further this develops. I bumped around in the garden for years, before arthritis really knocked me out. Gardening after that wasn't so much conscious as absolutely necessary." As happens with many small non-profit groups, situations in the lives of the founders made it impossible to keep this popular endeavour active, and it ceased operating in the mid 1990s. Sam Sullivan, Tetraplegic as a result of a skiing accident aged 19, revived DIGA in 2003, supported by its original founders. DIGA is again flourishing, continuing to develop meaningful experiences in gardening for people with disabilities. Pursuing their passion for gardening is something that many people with disabilities never imagined possible because of the many physical barriers. DIGA works to remove those barriers.
