When the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS opened in 1992, a British Columbian was dying from AIDS almost every day. While current advances in HIV treatment have made the disease a chronic but manageable illness, much work remains to be done. An estimated 13, 000 British Columbians are HIV infected, with close to 350 new cases reported each year. As well, more than 3, 200 cases of AIDS have been reported in the province, and a third of these individuals currently live with the disease. Drug resistance, adverse effects to medication, and barriers to accessing treatment and maintaining adherence are just a few of the many issues facing those who are HIV-positive. More importantly, people are still dying from the disease. The B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS is dedicated to improving the health of British Columbians with HIV through the development, ongoing monitoring and dissemination of comprehensive research and treatment programs for HIV and related diseases. The Centre is a key provincial resource, serving all health authorities, regions and citizens of B.C. The Centre places the disease under the microscope, provides care and treatment to those infected, educates doctors and healthcare professionals throughout the province, and promotes evidence-based social policy that helps protect people from acquiring the virus.

The 411 Seniors Centre is an inclusive, versatile and dynamic drop-in centre for older adults. We provide tools, services, programs and activities that enable low income seniors to live independent lives and thrive in our community. Through our organizational governance and volunteer constitution we provide opportunities for seniors to take a leadership role. The 411 Seniors Centre has a long standing commitment to diversity and inclusivity in service provision. Our focus includes: creating strong networks within the community, bridging connections between seniors from varied backgrounds, thwarting intolerance, promoting multiculturalism and empowering seniors. Through the delivery of our programs and activities we hope to further instill and promote independence and self esteem, while working towards the health and wellness of our community as a whole. We strive to meet the programming needs of our membership and volunteer base by focusing on present concerns, immediate needs and future trends. We strive to empower older adults to build and strengthen community capacity and to change and enhance their quality of life. Empowerment involves working alongside our seniors as we assist them to develop and strengthen their social, emotional, mental and physical well-being along with their economic independence and stability. We aim to assist in creating the foundation by which our members and seniors in the community can take a proactive role in guiding the community towards a healthier, stronger and more inclusive society. The 411 Seniors Centre in Vancouver is highly regarded by its customers for its welcoming atmosphere, helpful staff, and variety of programs. Seniors appreciate the ease of communicating with the team, the friendly environment, and the sense of community. The Vancouver Recital Society (VRS) is one of the premier concert presenters in North America, offering a milestone debut series for rising stars and an internationally renowned concert series for the world’s most celebrated performing artists. Started in 1980 by Founder and Artistic Director Leila Getz, the VRS presents twenty concerts a year at the Vancouver Playhouse in downtown Vancouver and at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC. Among other legendary artists, Yo-Yo Ma, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jessye Norman, Itzhak Perlman, Evgeny Kissin, Kathleen Battle and Vladimir Ashkenazy have all appeared in recital for the VRS. Notable VRS debuts include Cecilia Bartoli, Maxim Vengerov, Anne Sofie von Otter, András Schiff, Joshua Bell and Bryn Terfel. The VRS has also been a champion of Canadian artists such as Angela Cheng, Scott St. John, James Ehnes and Jon Kimura Parker among others. The Vancouver Recital Society is committed to fostering music education and appreciation in our community by offering concerts by leading world artists free of charge to inner-city and other Vancouver-area schools. The VRS also partners with the St. James Music Academy, the VSO School of Music and the Vancouver Academy of Music to offer lectures, workshops and masterclasses to Vancouver music students by visiting artists.
