Cait Redmond and Steve Myrden are East Coasters who met while teaching in Calgary in 1994. Subsequently, they moved to Japan for three years teaching English, immersing themselves in the culture and traveling extensively throughout Southeast Asia. They returned to Canada and spent two years on Vancouver Island, before returning to the Maritimes in 1999. Steve taught English at Sir John A. High School and Cait completed a Master’s degree in International Development Studies at St. Mary's University. Her research work took them to Latin America for four months to study women’s emerging roles in sustainable community-based development initiatives. They lived in New Zealand - with their dogs, Nootka and Kuma - from 2004 to 2007, where they taught English and Global Studies. There, they also engaged in outdoor pursuits and travel throughout the region. Upon returning to Nova Scotia, after 18 and 21 years of teaching respectively, Cait and Steve knew they wanted to take a new path and start a business that encompassed all their past education, experiences and passions, focusing on health and education around issues of food safety and sustainability, local economy and the environment. Mariposa Natural Market is a work in progress and will strive to become a local hub for wellness and the sharing of ideas for healthy individuals and communities.
