Built in 1876 as a Methodist church this Quinte West historical landmark known as the Johnstown Church operated as a place of worship until 1972. After years of neglect and disrepair it was slated for demolition. Local resident Roy Bonisteel was not prepared to let this happen. He renovated and restored the building in 1994 creating a unique gathering place for the community. Today, owners Lesley Bonisteel and Brian Weston are continuing to fulfil Roy’s vision and the vision of those who helped build this church building over 139 years ago by providing a place with a sense of community. The Old Church Theatre provides a venue for alternative entertainment and education. As a non-religious, non-profit organization, our focus will continue to be toward bringing various groups together into an environment which reinforces our social common ground. In the past we have brought together seniors, youth, homeschoolers, musicians, artists, playwrights and actors. Each has learned from the other through our workshops, films, concerts and presentations and many times the student has imparted his or her own wisdom upon the teacher. Old Church Theatre is a beautiful venue with indoor and outdoor settings that customers enjoy for various live music events. It offers a comfortable and intimate atmosphere with friendly staff and well-stocked bar. The acoustics are exceptional, attracting talented musicians. Some customers have participated in or appreciated past wine tasting experiences. The theatre is conveniently located.
