La Fédération québécoise du théâtre amateur (FQTA) a été fondée en 1958 à Montréal par Monsieur Guy Beaulne, directeur général du Grand théâtre de Québec et membre de l’Ordre du Québec et du Canada. Jusqu’en 1972, on connaissait la Fédération sous l’appellation d’Association Canadienne du Théâtre Amateur (ACTA), puis elle devint l’Association Québécoise du Jeune Théâtre (AQJT). C’est en 1986 qu’un changement d’orientation lui valut le nom d’Association québécoise du théâtre amateur (AQTA). Après sa restructuration en 1995, elle prend officiellement le titre de Fédération québécoise du théâtre amateur (FQTA).
