Symphony New Brunswick consists of professional musicians, with a limited number of auditioned apprentice positions. There are 40 members under a CBA between the NB local of the Canadian Federation of Musicians ( aka AFM) and SNB. More About the Orchestra A brief history of Symphony New Brunswick Although the roots of Symphony New Brunswick extend back to 1950, the present orchestra was formed in 1983. Its first subscription series was presented in Saint John in the 1985-1986 concert season. In the fall of 1987, the orchestra took its first steps towards becoming a regional professional orchestra by hiring Nurhan Arman as Music Director and forming the Saint John String Quartet, the members of which became the principals of the Symphony’s string sections. In 1990 the organization changedits name to “Symphony New Brunswick” reflecting its mission to serve the entire Province. Today, Symphony New Brunswick (‘SNB”) is the only full-size professional orchestra in New Brunswick. Michael Newnham was appointed Music Director and Principal Conductor in 2010, and is the third professional music director in the Symphony’s almost 30 year history. Under his leadership, SNB is experiencing a period of unprecedented artistic growth. The Orchestra’s six core professional musicians offer a full range of chamber music concerts in Saint John, Moncton, Fredericton and in other smaller communities. A large number of school and other educational outreach concerts are presented every season. In the 2012-2013 season, the Symphony’s musicians entertained an estimated 12, 000 school children. Our musicians all reside in New Brunswick, and hail from every corner of the province, as well as the rest of Canada, USA, Europe and South America. Get Involved.
