The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is one of 36 Public Health Units in the province of Ontario, Canada. We are a corporation under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. Currently we are funded jointly by the provincial government and the municipalities we serve. The Health Unit's main office is in Pembroke, with a branch office in Renfrew. Our approximately 70 staff members serve the County of Renfrew, the City of Pembroke, the Township of South Algonquin and most of Algonquin Provincial Park. The geographic area is 14, 980 square kilometers and the population is estimated at 103, 670 (2012). Mandate The legislative mandate for Ontario's 36 boards of health is described in the Health Protection and Promotion Act (HPPA). The guiding purpose of the HPPA is to "..provide for the organization and delivery of public health programs and services, the prevention of the spread of diseases and the promotion and protection of the health of the people of Ontario. S. 1990, c.7, s.2) The Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) establish requirements for fundamental public health programs and services, which include assessment and surveillance, health promotion and policy development, disease and injury prevention, and health protection. The OPHS outline the expectations for boards of health, which are responsible for providing public health programs and services that contribute to the physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being of all Ontarians.
