We are located directly in the heart of the Ottawa Community Housing Corporation's Britannia Woods community in the west end of Ottawa. The Britannia Woods Community House opened in 1976 with the purpose of ensuring the families living in the Britannia Woods community had access to social, educational and recreational supports. In the early 1990s, an Emergency Food Pantry was implemented to provide families with an emergency supply of food. Over the last 30 years, the Community House has been offering a wide range of programs and services that aim to improve the quality of life for multicultural families and households living on a fixed or low income. Programs and services are delivered in a community-led, holistic approach. The Community House works with the whole family unit; from preschool to school-aged to youth to adults. Community engagement is the key to success! The Britannia Woods community has a large population of children and youth (approximately 64% of residents are under the age of 20). The Community House staff strive to provide children and youth a nurturing and fun place to play and learn that will encourage their healthy development. The Royal Ritchie Drummers In January 2006, the Britannia Woods Youth Committee was successful at receiving a United Way Youth Action Grant for Multicultural Drumming lessons for the children in the community. The group grew together and in 2007, YFocus purchased the Royal Ritchie Drummers 6 drums. The Royal Ritchie Drummers have been performing all over Ottawa since 2006. Registered Midwives are health professionals who provide primary care to women and their babies during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postpartum period. As primary care providers, midwives may be the first point of entry to maternity services, and are fully responsible for clinical decisions and the management of care within their scope of practice. Midwives provide the complete course of low-risk prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, including physical examinations, screening and diagnostic tests, the assessment of risk and abnormal conditions, and the conduct of normal vaginal deliveries. Midwives work in collaboration with other health professionals and consult with or refer to medical specialists as appropriate. The midwifery model of care promotes normal birth, enables women to make informed choices, and provides continuity of care and support throughout the childbearing experience. Midwives attend births in hospitals, birth centres and at home.
Customers praise the compassionate, understanding, and patient approach of the midwives at East Ottawa Midwives. They appreciate the individualized care and support throughout their pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. Midwives are described as knowledgeable and empowering. The birth center experience is mentioned positively for its safety and comfort.
