Surex Community Services was created in 1980 as a pilot project to repatriate individuals who had long resided in Huronia Regional Centre (Orillia, ON). This was the first attempt in Ontario at integrating institutionalized people with severe disabilities into community based services. This pilot project marked a significant change and direction for the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services. The success of this project led the way to a provincial policy and strategy to significantly downsize provincially operated institutions and eventually close all institutions. The last institution was closed on March 31, 2009. Surex played a vital role in confirming that people with disabilities could live and work in the community. Surex was incorporated in 1983 as a not for profit, charitable organization and is governed by a volunteer, community Board of Directors. Surex operates several homes and a multi-service community support programs in the eastern part of Toronto for adults who have a developmental disability. These programs are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services and donations from the public.

Our Story Established in 2005, New Circles is a not-for-profit social service agency that helps residents of Flemingdon Park, Thorncliffe Park and Victoria Village who need our support. New Circles was founded on two programs, the Clothing Program and Holiday Angel Program, which continue to be cornerstones of the work we do today. Our founder and Board of Directors member, Cindy Blakely envisioned a welcoming space, where low income residents could access basic necessities with dignity and respect. New Circles continues to meet that vision and has expanded to include a range of programs offering connections and opportunities for skills development to community members. Charitable Registration Number: 83634 3673 RR0001 Our Mission To create new circles and successful beginnings by welcoming, supporting and connecting individuals and families with the resources they need Our Vision Building strong and caring communities where everyone has access to the basic necessities Our Values Respect: For the people we serve, the agencies, schools and organizations we work with and the staff, volunteers and donors who support us. Founded by Fr. Hernan Astudillo, the Centre, which is totally self-sustaining, was established to provide a space for the Latin American immigrant and for the preservation of the Latin American culture in Canada. With close to 300 active and 500 occasional members, which include children, youth, adults and seniors, we strive to preserve, promote and share the rich Latin American culture and traditions. As the number of Latin American immigrants coming to Canada rises steadily, the Centre also provides a support system for the community to ease their transition into the Canadian way of life.
