The Salvation Army has been active in the community of Nanaimo since 1888. It operated out of the building at 19 Nicol until a new church building was opened on the corner of Bruce and Eighth Street, in April, 1986. The Salvation Army continues to `provide emergency assistance and the community meal program out of the original building at 19 Nicol Street. In 2007, the New Hope Centre which houses an emergency shelter, transitional housing and halfway house was opened next to the original building.

Nanaimo Disability Resource Centre are a registered charity serving persons with disabilities since 1990. We identify needs and offer programs and services to promote greater participation in our community. We provide interactive presentations to various community groups and organizations to speak about our programs and services. 
The Nanaimo Discovery Centre is a community resource, primarily run on contributions with limited staff. Customers praise the friendly and helpful staff, volunteers, and the great service they provide. Some have received assistance with obtaining disability placards.

Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation was established in 1977 as a means through which grateful patients and loved ones could "give back" to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). The Foundation began actively fundraising in 1991 in response to the rising cost of delivering quality healthcare on Central Vancouver Island.
