A beautiful story of a family passionate about recycling 1940 Jean Lanctôt creates the Montreal Dairy Exchange, a company specialized in the sale and purchase of glass bottles used in the pharmaceutical and milk industries. 1953 Jean Lanctôt purchases a warehouse which used to be… an icebox! The Montreal Dairy Exchange settles into 6327 Clark in Montreal, where it will remain until the year 2000. 1956 Simon Lanctôt, Jean's brother, joins the ranks of the company as Director. 1959 The company, requiring more and more space, acquires the adjacent building to the North. 1960's The arrival of plastic as the primary material for containers and packaging threatens the company's survival. The dairy industry adopts flat cardboard and plastic bags for milk containers. Little by little, the Montreal Dairy Exchange transfers its activities away from bottles and towards the recuperation of used cardboard boxes, therefore becoming Montreal Box Trading Enr. 1970's A few machines are added to lend a hand to the men in the warehouse - notably, to tie the boxes, a task which had previously been performed by hand. It was normal to have to tie up then discharge entire wagons full of boxes arriving all the way from Winnipeg by rail! 1979 Montreal Box Trading becomes CARTONNERIE MONTRÉAL Enr. 1984 Simon Lanctôt and his 2 sons, Marc and Guy, purchase the company, which then becomes Cartonnerie Montréal Inc. 1991 Guy and Marc Lanctôt take over the company when their father (and associate) Simon opts to begin his hard earned retirement. 1990's The used boxes market is considerably transformed. Many companies adopt better structured systems to recover recyclables and re-usables, generating an important increase in used boxes, which then arrive more regularly. The warehouse on Clark no longer suits the demand. An important decision must be made… 1998 Having studied several alternatives, the chosen solution is to build a new warehouse
