After moving to Canada from Ethiopia in 1993, Afework Girmayie and Helen Woldemichael opened the East African Cafe in 2005. With the assistance of two staff members, Helen prepares all the food served in the establishment, including the always-fresh injera bread. Afework works up front in the cafe, greeting customers, delivering food to the tables, and making everyone feel welcome. 
The East African Cafe is a popular spot for vegetarians and vegans, known for its generous portions and great service. Customers highly recommend the vegetarian combo, tsaba tibs, makiyato, and Ethiopian/Eritrean dishes. The ambiance is cozy and the service unobtrusive. Some customers mention language barriers with the servers. Prices are considered expensive but the food is considered worth it. The restaurant is accessible and there are nearby parking lots.
