The MĂ©tis Commission for Children and Families of BC was incorporated as a non-profit society under the British Columbia Society Act on September 20, 1999. Under the leadership of the original 6 Commissioners the MĂ©tis Commission was established as a non-political body to advise governments with regard to services for MĂ©tis children and families in British Columbia. These individuals included: Margaret Clement, Sharon Coflin, Keith Jager, Gary McDermott, Robert Simmonds and Tammy Sloan. Today, the MĂ©tis Commission is identified within provincial legislation as the designated Metis community for children, youth and families within the child welfare system throughout British Columbia. Through this legislation, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) has a legal obligation to notify the MĂ©tis Commission when a MĂ©tis child is involved with the child welfare system for any reason.

In 1998, a team of concerned, Métis people established what was then known as Kamloops Métis Family Services in an effort to support the well-being of Métis children and families in a culturally appropriate manner. While the agency’s mandate has not changed since 1998, our name has. The agency was later changed to Interior Métis Child and Family Services and in February 2012 was officially changed to Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services. This last name change reflects not only the desire to embrace our beautiful Michif language but also to communicate our commitment as Métis people to care for and take care of ourselves.

School Based (5-12 years) The school based program is designed to meet the needs of children, between the ages of 5 to 12 years, who have been diagnosed as having Autism Spectrum Disorder. Children attend the Centre in place of attending their home-school, or they attend the Centre part-time during the week with remainder of the week being spent in their home school. The goal for all children is to prepare them for an integrated classroom setting in their neighbourhood school. We also provide parent education for all parents and caregivers who have a child registered in our program. A close liaison is maintained between the child’s integrated school placement and Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism Society. ACADEMICS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY SPEECH AND LANGUAGE MUSIC THERAPY INTEGRATED PHYSICAL PROGRAM (I.P.P.) LIFE SKILLS Enrollment: All school age children registered through School District #73 are assessed by the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism staff and then screened by a School District Screening Committee prior to their placement in our program. Children working on a one-to-one or one-to-two basis receive instruction in life skills, play, social integration, pre-academic and academic training in additional to other therapies. We also provide parent education for all parents and caregivers who have a child registered in our program. A close liaison is maintained between the child’s integrated school placement and Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism Society. Extended Program (6–18 years) This program is for children aged 6 to 18 who meet the criteria for funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development through the Autism Funding Program. It provides intensive, goal-oriented intervention services in an environment outside the child’s educational program. An individualized program is created to match the child’s developmental level and learning strengths and areas of concerns. Services may include occupation

The Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre's purpose is to provide free, client centred support services to victims of sexual assault, child sexualized abuse, domestic violence and sexual harassment. Our goals include: Providing supportive, feminist-driven counselling that helps empower individuals to take charge of their lives and overcome all forms of sexualized violence. Providing education on the issues to both adults and children. Supporting victims through the legal system so that more victims are encouraged to report their abuse and more offenders are brought to both justice and therapy for their behaviours. Teaching victims the assertiveness skills and the positive self-image necessary to avoid revictimization. Supporting women in their quest for social and economic equality. Supporting men in their quest to understand these issues and to heal from their own abuse issues.
