Veritas Catholic Books and Gifts was opened on October 4, 1994, in the Brewery Market on Lower Water Street. Since then it has undergone several relocations at the expiry of leases, usually of five years each: to the Maritime Center, where it occupied two different locations, more and more visible and spacious, and finally to the present location at 30 Farnham Gate Road. The inspiration for the initiative came from the Antigonish Right to Life store, which had been opened and was operated by Ramona MacDonnell. Her son Tony was working in Halifax at the time and was also promoting a weekly prayer meeting at St. Theresa’s Parish. The members of that prayer group were the first volunteers of Veritas Catholic Books and Gifts. Tony MacDonnell left Halifax soon afterwards to join a religious community. Since the very beginning, for all the fifteen years of its existence, the Bookstore has been operating exclusively by volunteers. The Board of the Veritas Society meets four times a year. An Annual General Meeting is held once a year for the election of officers and other items of agenda. The purpose of the Society, as stated in the Memorandum of Association, September 29, 1994, is first of all “to promote the Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the living Magisterium of the Catholic Church”.
