Halifax on Nov. 3, 1975. We started with an inventory of mainly paperbacks on the advice of a more seasoned bookseller who told us there was no future in dusty old hardcovers. Thank goodness our customers felt differently. From almost the first day, we had requests for books we hadn't heard of, subjects & specialties we didn't know existed. That was the real world of used books and that was where we wanted to be. Our customers taught us through their interests and what an education it has been. Throughout the years we have bought & sold so many wonderful books and have met so many interesting people. We have developed specialties in Atlantic Provinces history and literature, early Canadiana, Canadian Art, Canadian Military, Illustrated Books, Fine bindings, Early Children's books as well as a general stock of good used & out of print books on a variety of subjects including Literature, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Science, History, Antiquarian, etc., etc. We try and issue several catalogues a year mainly on Atlantic Province History & Literature. We have been at this location on Inglis for over 30 years and have a select collection of used, rare & op books .

The work of the Shambhala Archives is ongoing as we continue to migrate audio and video to new media so that the teachings can continue to be heard and seen. Our work in the Ladrang, the division that cares for Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche's belongings continues not only in the preservation of each object or piece of clothing, but involves recording pertinent information through research and database cataloguing. Presently the Shambhala Archives is one of one of the largest audio-visual collections of Tibetan Buddhist teachers in the West. We invite you explore this site to learn more about what we have, what we have been doing, and what we still need to do.

Veritas Catholic Books and Gifts was opened on October 4, 1994, in the Brewery Market on Lower Water Street. Since then it has undergone several relocations at the expiry of leases, usually of five years each: to the Maritime Center, where it occupied two different locations, more and more visible and spacious, and finally to the present location at 30 Farnham Gate Road. The inspiration for the initiative came from the Antigonish Right to Life store, which had been opened and was operated by Ramona MacDonnell. Her son Tony was working in Halifax at the time and was also promoting a weekly prayer meeting at St. Theresa’s Parish. The members of that prayer group were the first volunteers of Veritas Catholic Books and Gifts. Tony MacDonnell left Halifax soon afterwards to join a religious community. Since the very beginning, for all the fifteen years of its existence, the Bookstore has been operating exclusively by volunteers. The Board of the Veritas Society meets four times a year. An Annual General Meeting is held once a year for the election of officers and other items of agenda. The purpose of the Society, as stated in the Memorandum of Association, September 29, 1994, is first of all “to promote the Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the living Magisterium of the Catholic Church”.
Veritas Catholic Books & Gifts' customers express high satisfaction with Joel Buckler's physiotherapy services. Joel's expertise, professionalism, and accommodating personality are praised. The clean, bright clinic and friendly staff are noted positively. Customers share success stories of recovering from various injuries with Joel's help.
