Description
The Port Alberni library was created in 1936 by public plebiscite and was initially located, in 1938, in the back of McVicar’s Drug Store - where store employees acted as library attendants. Then 34 years later, in 1972, the library was located at the Echo Centre and has since undergone a major refurbishment and expansion with the official grand re-opening December 1, 2007.

This includes reference and reader's advisory services, as well as programs and special events for children, teens ands adults. The Library offers public access computers with Internet as well as wireless Internet at all library branches.
The Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) is the fourth largest library system in British Columbia. It serves more than 400,000 people on Vancouver Island, the Queen Charlottes and the Central Coast (Bella Coola) through 38 branch libraries and a books by mail service. Administrative offices are located in Nanaimo. Vancouver Island Regional Library opened its doors in 1936 as the Vancouver Island Union Library; it was the second regional library in North America.
