United Way Sudbury and Nipissing Districts, North Bay, ON

United Way/Centraide began in Canada with the formation of a Federation of Jewish Philanthropies in both Montreal and Toronto in 1917 and the Toronto Federation for Community Service in 1918. Prior to the formation of the Federations, social agencies conducted their own private appeals; but because of the ever-increasing multiplicity of appeals, returns from private individuals, businesses, churches and corporations began to diminish. The Federations were formed to integrate these fund raising activities into one federated campaign.
