Staff in our hospital had a "psychological debrief" following a traumatic violent event, that resulted in x1 staff having their arm broken in two bones, and x1 staff being brutally attacked, punched 8+ times in the head by a 300lbs+ man with a history of violence to staff and in the community and reportedly a "black belt" in a martial art. Glenn did not have any knowledge of what event he was providing "psychological debrief" for. Glenn's entire session was focused on how mental health patients are not accountable for violence, that there is a "reason" for their violence, and that staff approach is the only method to reducing risk of violence, as violence is expected to occur in mental health nursing as 'part of the job'. Glenn was very ignorant of what he was teaching, and his session seemed more of an educational in-service and not a psychological debrief. When asked/ questioned about anything he was preaching, Glenn responded by telling us that he's basically leading us horses to water and that it's up to us to drink the water or not. He emailed our management back about how we weren't receptive or getting it, what he was telling us. We understand what he was telling us, we just weren't agreeing that what he was telling us was relevant or helpful to our violence event "psychological debrief". I was very disappointed in the "psychological debrief" we rec'd, and feel more irritable towards it. A very terrible listener, giving us a cookie-cutter educational session about how to fix our approach to patients, instead of the advertised "psychological debrief". Also, very full of himself/everyone else is wrong attitude, with very seemingly cluster B narcissistic traits. I worry for clients receiving his care and would never allow myself his care, regarding my belief for its potential risk for harm to the client's mental health, related to his competence/ignorance and own personality problems.
