Ithaca, the jewel of the Ionian Sea, the Ionian Islands' pride, the sacred rock that still remains a lighthouse of civilization through past centuries, the mother of principals such as love for one's country, destination, hospitality and hope. Its history begins centuries ago, since it has first been inhabited 6000 years ago and it became internationally known by mythical Odysseus. Even in periods of big destruction it has been abandoned, it never lost its historic identity. During its long history, the island had many invaders come but its historic cultural development remained intact until, in the year 1864, it became part of mother Greece. In Odyssey, a masterpiece of literary work, Homer describes the island and the adventures of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, his voyage back from Troy. Giving to the reader various political, cultural, social and geographical information which are being used on many occasions for research about ancient history of the island as well as by archeologists in order to track down and find many archeological monuments and findings. Nowadays, Ithaca is an island of special natural beauty and it is being developed as a destination for tourists without damaging its charm and its tradition. The island's population does not exceed the 3000 inhabitants, but there are many who live across the globe.
