The smartphone’s conventional camera has become commoditized. Image quality has reached a high level, and further differentiation on resolution is reaching its physical limits; indeed, the size of pixels cannot get much smaller. Furthermore, the camera ecosystem is mature, with established camera module integrators, image sensor providers and lens manufacturers competing primarily on price. The existing hardware platforms (ISPs) are highly optimized for power, speed and cost. Major innovation in this segment is unlikely and therefore growth prospects are essentially flat.
The major disruption to the conventional camera will come from computational cameras: new optical and software designs that are not easily integrated into the existing ecosystem.
