How to bleed your brakes presented by MTL-AutoParts.com

2013.03.19

With the right tools, a little know-how and some patience, bleeding your brakes is actually pretty easy. But before I explain the steps, let’s get acquainted with the brake system itself. The brake rotors and the brake pads are what actually do the stopping. The brake calipers squeeze the pads to the rotors, causing the vehicle to slow when the brake pedal is depressed. And, the simple hydraulic system, which connects the pedal to the caliper, is what needs to be bled. That’s because if air is present in the system, mushy brakes are the result. Since you’re bleeding air from the system, you always need to start with the wheel farthest away from the master cylinder.

Basically, while your partner pumps the pedal, you need to loosen the caliper bleed screw until air bubbles out. While the pedal is still depressed, tighten the screw. Do this on all four wheels, working your way from the farthest to nearest tire, and you’re done. Whenever you’re performing a brake job, it’s a great time to add some upgraded components. Companies like EBC brakes and Brembo brakes make some great performance brake parts like drilled and slotted rotors and stainless steel brake lines. Couple these upgrades with some ceramic brake pads from companies like Hawk or Raybestos, and you’ll be stopping like a race car!

The great thing about aftermarket brakes is that whether you’re shopping Honda Accord brakes, F150 brakes or even Toyota Corolla brakes, you can put some performance into the pedal of any daily driver.

Symptoms of a worn wheel bearing presented by MTL Auto Parts

2013.03.19

Wheel bearings are critical to the proper function of a vehicle's hub, tire and wheel assemblies. By allowing friction-free movement and rotation of a vehicle's hub assemblies, wheel bearings promote smooth vehicle tire and wheel motion. Bad wheel bearings, however, negatively affect vehicle tire and wheel operation and produce a variety of symptoms like noises, poor handling and tire wear. Listen for noises such as snapping and clicking, which can be heard when cornering the vehicle, or a grinding sound, also when turning, or when the vehicle's load shifts.

Humming, growling and rumbling noises also may be heard when driving the vehicle straight, with the sound growing louder when the vehicle is turned. A worn bearing sometimes will cause a wheel to vibrate or wobble. A badly worn wheel bearing may also cause a vehicle to pull to the side, sometimes quite sharply, when the brakes are applied. In such cases, the brakes could also feel like they are pulsating.

In a worst case scenario, a worn bearing can damage the sensors on anti-lock braking systems, causing them to fail outright. A bad wheel bearing can cause a tire to wear out at a much faster rate than normal, particularly if the bearing is extremely worn or loose. If the wheel bearings check out okay but noise, tire wear or handling issues persist, that doesn't mean there is no problem. These can also indicate other major vehicle defects, such a worn constant velocity joint, damaged tires or a front end that is badly out of alignment.

Signs of a Bad Water Pump presented by MTL-AutoParts

2013.03.19

The engine's water pump is the most important part in the vehicle's cooling system. It keeps your engine from overheating. An overheating engine may be destroyed or result in expensive repairs. The water pump attaches to the front of the engine with a seal, inside the metal housing resides a rotating shaft and a centrifugal pump. The opposite end not attached to the engine has a pulley mount for the belt to sit on and rotate. The water pump operates when your engine is running. It pumps cool water and coolant into the engine block and head, and then exits the engine through a hose into the radiator. The coolant circulates through the radiator to lower its temperature and then travels back to the water pump through a hose and into the engine again. This cycle repeats as long as the engine is running. If your water pump is not working effectively, you will notice a rise in the engine temperature. This is observable on the temperature gauge inside your vehicle. It is a good idea to know where the gauge rests in normal operation so that you will notice a higher-than-normal temperature reading.

Some vehicles also will alert you to the high temperature by activating the check engine light. When a water pump fails, it will usually become hot, blow the seal and start leaking. If you are adding water to your radiator or radiator overflow canister on a continual basis, then there is a water leak. To see if it is the water pump, you can place a piece of cardboard directly under the water pump at night and check to see if it is wet from leaking water and coolant the next morning. You can also feel the bottom side when the engine is cool to check for leaks. If the drive belt or timing belt, which operates the water pump, is loose from wear, it will cause the pump to operate inefficiently. The belt should be tight and you should be able to observe minimal slack in it when you push it with your fingers. If the belt is slipping, it will make a squealing noise and should be replaced. If you notice a rattling or growling noise, it may be the impeller or the bearings that have failed in your water pump. This will cause ineffective or no coolant to be pumped into your engine
