Nicole Amanda Photography - Interview

But if you can do what you love in life...

Is it the best job ever? Well yeah, sometimes, most of the time really, but it also comes along with some challenges that not everybody realizes. Most people would imagine being a photographer is all glamour, all fun, all exciting… but there are other things that really happen: spending hours on editing, not so glamorous all the time as you never know where the shooting will take place and how the weather is going  to be like but if you can do what you love in life, then you’re the richest person in the world.

Cylex 1. What is it that you like about photography?

Nicole Amanda Photography: What I love about wedding photography is that it is almost always upbeat with happy people. Yes, there are often stressors throughout the day or the planning process but you are working with people who genuinely want to be where they are in life. I love being able to help out and navigate them through the process, especially if they do not have a wedding planner.

Cylex 2. How would you describe your style and why did you chose it?

Nicole Amanda Photography: My style is a soft, clean, romantic style. I just fell into it because I love bright, natural imagery. I don't do a whole lot of editing and keep it very true to life. I love this style because it will never look dated.

Cylex 3. Do you recall your first experience as a photographer? Please tell us a few words about it.

Nicole Amanda Photography: I do not recall my first experience in general, because I grew up in high school being "that girl with the camera," so I just fell into it. But I do remember my first wedding like it was yesterday. I was overwhelmed having to go through a whole day on your toes with changing scenarios, but that's still to this day, what I love about it. I need to be constantly challenged.

Cylex 4. Where are the photo sessions held? What is included in the session fee?

Nicole Amanda Photography: I am primarily a wedding and engagement photographer, and your engagement session fee is included in your wedding coverage cost. What most people don't know is that the purpose of the engagement session is to practice with the same photographer who will be with you on your wedding day.

Cylex 5. Could you share some of your experience of your early beginnings in this industry?

Nicole Amanda Photography: I fell into this industry almost by accident, loving photography, and typical little girls dreaming of their wedding; I didn't realize I could have a full-time career amalgamating the two! I went to school for photography, and didn't like the studio-style aspect of it, but it was a learning curve of actually finding what I did truly love. I was fortunate to have a few couples willing to give this new girl a try and am forever grateful for my start!

Cylex 6. What are the most common wedding photography questions you receive from brides?

Nicole Amanda Photography: I have become sort of a wedding planner in the process, answering questions about a lot of things outside photography! I help to construct timelines and lists, attach boutonnieres and bustle dresses. The most common question before booking is why it is such a necessity to have an engagement session. Most people think it's just an extra frivolous photo session but it's meant to get comfortable with your wedding photographer. As beautiful as your photos look, if you feel awkward while taking the photo, that is the only thing you will remember about it, and I don't want anyone to ever feel that way about their wedding photos.

Cylex 7. How long do you photograph at a wedding? Are there different packages that you can offer?

Nicole Amanda Photography: I offer one package, which can be customized; but The Wedding Experience includes 8 hours because after 5 years of creating custom packages, it is typically what all couples come to. Sometimes you may need a 9th hour, but with a carefully constructed timeline, 8 hours is perfect to capture all the main elements without being too rushed. It includes your engagement session, which is an essential part to feeling comfortable and confident in your wedding day imagery.

With a photo you can capture a moment, and have it forever. I think we take that idea for granted, with photography being so ubiquitous these days. But seriously just take a second to appreciate that. Photography changes the way you see things. It’s actually quite an incredible transformation to experience.
