Standard Scale Service was started in 1928 by Mr. Wes Irwin, repairing air compressors that were commonly used by grain elevators in the farmlands of Western Canada. He quickly realized that most of the farmers were relying heavily on scales to weigh their grain. A poorly-calibrated scale could make the difference between profit or loss for the year, so by 1930 Wes began selling Fairbanks weigh scales, as well as providing testing and repairs to keep them operating at peak accuracy. Over the years Wes expanded the range of operations across western Canada with the help of his nephew Basil Craik, and soon to follow was Wes’s son Max, growing friendships and business relations that have lasted to the present day. In 1954, Ian Cowan joined the company as an apprentice repairman and would go on to become a share holder of the company. It has been a family affair ever since, with his son Robin taking ownership in 1988 and expanding our services to include manufacturing. Robin still manages the day to day operations, with his brother Brent as service manager keeping the legacy of quality and experience alive.
