However, most of the new clients I see also have several unrecognized problems. These issues are part of the ongoing “background noise” of most people’s lives. These background problems often function like a gang of bad influences: – they have been "ganging up on" my new client, consuming his or her energy and resilience. This is why, when a major stressor arises unexpectedly, it can be overwhelming. I will help you cope with a crisis, or a Big Problem. I will want to find out how many other problems are overloading you. We can take emergency steps to cope with a Big Problem, and we can manage each of the small problems. When that gang of lesser stressors has been weakened, your strength and resilience can return. Common “gangs” of problems include: burdensome patterns at work, in families, or in relationships, and many kinds of unfortunate habits. Unrecognized or untreated physical health conditions can be very important. Many of my clients need help with anxiety and depression. Severe anxiety issues are usually related to past events, but sometimes they develop without severe trauma. I will help you discover the causes of fears. After acute distress is managed, we can work with issues from your individual life history. Please read "PTSD Treatment" at www.vian.name. Similarly, depression may be due to recent events, but sometimes it develops without obvious causes. I can help you learn about how that can happen, and what to do about it.
