Catholic Family Services of Durham (CFSD) was founded in 1981 when Father Canning of St. Gertrude’s Parish asked the Archbishop for help for the people of Oshawa. The Archbishop sent Sister Patricia Grant who was to be the only Executive Director for the first 23 years of the agency. Her first “office” was in the basement of St. Gertrude’s Church and, as she hired social workers, she moved to the house on the parking lot of the church. As the agency expanded, it became necessary to move again, this time to Simcoe Street South across from Memorial Park. We now have offices in Oshawa, Ajax, and Port Perry. The agency has always provided services to the entire community, without regard to religious belief. The current Executive Director is Elizabeth Pierce. CFSD is accredited with Catholic Charities, United Way of Durham Region and Canadian Centre for Accreditation.
